Why E-Invoices Are the Future of Accounting

Why E-Invoices Are the Future of Accounting
From 2025 onwards, e-invoicing will gradually become mandatory for companies in Germany. This means that
invoices in paper or PDF format will soon be a thing of the past. But what does this mean in concrete terms – and how can you ensure that your company is prepared in time?
What is an e-invoice?
An e-invoice is not simply an invoice in PDF format. It follows a structured data format (e.g. XRechnung or ZUGFeRD) that can be read and processed automatically.
The advantage: invoice data can be transferred directly to ERP or accounting systems – without any manual typing or checking.
The main advantages of e-invoices
- No more manual data entry – everything is automated.
- The structured layout helps to avoid typos and duplicates.
- Less paper, printing and archiving work.
- Switching to digital invoices saves resources and CO₂.
- E-invoices comply with all tax regulations – including traceability and audit-proof archiving.
The E-Invoicing Mandate – What’s Changing
Mit dem Wachstumschancengesetz
With the Growth Opportunities Act (Wachstumschancengesetz), the German government has paved the way for mandatory e-invoicing.
From January 1, 2025, all companies must be able to receive e-invoices.
From 2026, issuing e-invoices will also become mandatory.
Businesses that continue to rely on PDFs or paper risk delays, errors – and, in the worst case, compliance issues.
